The Logistics Workforce is Changing

The logistics sector is often thought of as being a male dominated environment. Here at Woodsides, our head office at Ballynure is operated by just over 100 staff, with women accounting for 48% of the workforce at the office. Equal opportunities is encouraged across all areas of the business. We are aware that there is an appetite for women drivers across our business divisions, and are encouraging those who would like a career in this area, to get in contact.

What is your role within the business?
Gb traffic planner

How long have you been at Woodside Logistics Group?
I originally joined in 2002 in a key account role and left in 2004 to do some travelling. I came back in 2005 and have been here ever since!

What does a typical day at work involve?
Primarily liaising with both drivers and customers. Customers to advise of and arrange deliveries, and drivers to plan and allocate those deliveries to. Mornings are spent speaking to customers and afternoons focus on planning the fleet to meet the requirements of our customers. Time management is key to ensuring the day goes well!

Why did you take up a role in the logistics sector?
When I was finishing school I was undecided as to what career path I wanted to follow. The transportation degree was brought to my attention by my careers advisor at school and I decided to give it a go. The transportation sector is so huge and there are so many industries within it, all of which are very interesting and challenging, not forgetting hugely important.

What advice would you give to other women who are looking for their next career move?
A role in logistics offers the opportunity to work in a fast paced environment in an industry where on time deliveries are only one key component.  It’s an industry that works in real time, it’s quick moving,  requires good communication and decision making skills, and if you thrive on this you will do well. If you have the time to invest in a company that is committed to re-investing in you, you will excel.  The rewards are limitless!

What is your role within the business?
HR Manager

How long have you been at Woodside Logistics Group?
I have been with Woodside Logistics Group just over a year, so i'm still a bit of a new-bee!

What does a typical day at work involve?
In the main I provide support, advice and guidance to the management team on all HR issues.  No two days are ever the same.  Some days I could be in formal meetings with management, other days out at careers fairs promoting the company externally or involved in contracts and paperwork.  HR is such a wide ranging area which includes attendance management, recruitment and selection, learning and development, disciplines and grievances - so there is always plenty to keep me busy.

Why did you take up a role in the logistics sector?
I began my career in the hospitality sector, so got a flavour for working in private business. I later provided outsourced HR for a large public sector organisation before working in the public sector for some time.  I was excited to work for a private company again and the idea of working with the big lorries appealed to me.  To be honest, I’m hoping to get a wee sneaky drive of one of our trucks!!

What advice would you give to other women who are looking for their next career move?
My advice to other women looking for their next career move is to weigh up what you really enjoy doing and balance that with what you have enjoyed least in your previous roles.  Take a look at what job roles you would fancy doing in the future (5-10 years) and then think of the experience/skills/knowledge you need to achieve to get you there. This will hopefully give you some direction on your next move.
